How to grow your hair - A no-nonsense guide...

Hair care can be overwhelming, everyone has got an opinion on how to grow your hair. I'm here to tell you my professional, no nonsense advice on how to achieve long, luscious locks!

1. Regular Trims

This is probably the most important... as a hairdresser I'm always telling my clients this, and I'm not just saying it for the sake of it! Removing dead ends will prevent the hair from breaking and splitting up the hair shaft. It also means your body can put more effort into growing you hair rather then trying to repair those dead ends.

If you're trying to grow your hair I would recommend getting a small trim every 10-12 weeks. If you're trying to maintain the length that it already is I would go 6-8 weeks.

2. Protect from the heat

If you use any type of heat styling tool you need to use heat protectant. Using this will prevent the damage that heat causes to the hair ensuring your hair stays healthy, meaning it will grow... simple! My fave heat protector is Icon Welder by Evo.

3. Healthy Scalp

A healthy scalp means healthy hair. Your scalp produces natural oils which are essential for your hair, stimulating the scalp with massage is a great way to ensure your hair is getting the natural oils it needs. I like to use a scalp brush or my fingers to do this (don't do this if you have a naturally oily scalp)

Removing product build up is also a great way of keeping the scalp healthy, if you use lots of styling products you should definitely add a scalp detox into your hair routine. I love the Umberto Giannini Grow scrub!

4. Supplements & Diet

Look inward when youre having issues with your hair growth. Are you eating a balanced diet? Are you lacking in any vitamins or minerals?

Foods that are great for hair growth are; green leafy veg eg. spinach, eggs, sweet potatoes, walnuts and oily fish. But just a balanced diet in general is essential.

Some vitamins that help hair growth are; B12, Biotin, Zinc, Vitamins C & D. Taking supplements will encourage healthy hair starting from inside your body. If you are experiencing hair loss you can seek medical advice, asking for a blood test to find out if you're deficient in anything is a good idea. Taking Vitamin B12 will not be effective unless you are actually lacking it in your body.

5. Quality of hair tools/ equipment.

Lastly its so important to use tools on your hair that are no going to cause damage. For example; silk scrunchies, tangle teaser/boar bristle brush, silk pillow case; micro fibre hair towels. Using these kind of products will keep your hair in great condition, therefore encouraging hair growth.

Also making sure your hair dryers and heat tools are up to date helps enourmously. Using hair straighteners that are 10 years old and catching/pulling your hair every time you use them is not a great idea. The new tools have better technology to minimise damage.
